People with high blood pressure are likely to develop various diseases of heart, and suffer for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, many people having high blood pressure depend on various medications and face a life threat too. However, you can control this problem by controlling your diet. If you take immediate precautions as soon as you detect the problem, you can control it to a large extent.

All you need is to have a great will power, which will help you resist the temptations that come your way in form of various foods. Given below are some diet tips, which will help you control your blood pressure:

1. If you are suffering from high blood pressure, then you should have foods that contain low fat and salt, and vitamins. Go for diet that contains good amount of nutrients including essential magnesium and potassium. Just make small changes in your diet. For example, eat sandwiches instead of burgers, or eat baked potatoes in place of fries.

2. Avoid eating from outside as much as you can. Remember, home cooked foods provide you more nutritional value, so develop an interest in cooking. Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. If you are a non-vegetarian, eat fresh meat and completely avoid packaged foods. Prepackaged foods lack many essential nutrients, and thus they should be completely avoided by a hypertensive patient.

3. For getting more potassium in your diet, eat raisins, seeds, figs, tomatoes, nuts, potatoes, and bananas. Remember, potassium-rich diet is good for people with hypertension.

4. Similarly, magnesium is another important nutrient, which is highly recommended for people with high blood pressure. Eat broccoli, spinach, wheat, oysters, grain, and beans. If you are getting medications for hypertension, get in touch with a doctor and prepare a list of things that you can eat. You can even look for required information on the internet.

5. Also figure out an ideal workout plan and stick to it. With regular exercise and diet control, you can control this problem and live a healthy life.

Robert Pleva, a 60 year old man from Florida is the latest patient to be helped by Adult Stem Cells.

Suffering from Fabry Disease (a genetic disorder in which the body fails to metabolize lipids) his entire life, it finally caused a heart attack in 1999. The heart attack caused severe heart damage and Robert eventually went into congestive heart failure. His ejection fraction dropped down to 28%. Robert also had very high blood pressure. Robert suffered from shortness of breath and had very low energy levels. He eventually had to go on the heart transplant list.

Not wanting a heart transplant and being on heavy medications the rest of his life, Robert looked for other options. He found one in stem cell therapy. Robert found a doctor who was using patients own Adult Stem Cells taken from his peripheral blood to help rebuild damaged heart tissue.

Robert went to the Dominican Republic for the stem cell treatment. There, his own stem cells were implanted using a catheter in a painless procedure. Treated in June 2008, Robert went to get his heart tested in January 2009. He was excited to see his ejection fraction had risen from 28% all the way to 44%.

These days, Robert is working full time and enjoying his life much more. He has increased energy levels and has cut down on his medication greatly. His blood pressure has improved as well. He is no longer facing a heart transplant. Robert hopes to see even more improvement in the near future.

Heart bypass surgery is performed to create a new route (termed a “bypass”) for the flow of oxygen and blood to the heart. It is performed when coronary artery disease partially or totally blocks the arteries – the small blood vessels which supply the heart with nutrients and oxygen – which lead to the heart. When coronary arteries become blocked the heart cannot obtain sufficient blood, a condition which is termed coronary artery disease, and which can cause severe chest pain (termed angina). Some coronary artery disease can be treated with medicines alone; but severe cases require coronary artery bypass surgery.

Before receiving surgery the patients are given anesthesia, which renders them unconscious and unable to feel the pain. The anesthesia effects last for the entire time of the surgery. Most of the people who have bypass surgery are connected to a bypass pump or a heart-lung bypass machine which does the work of the heart while the heart is stopped during surgery. The machine circulates the blood and adds oxygen to it. Another method of surgery doesn’t use the machine but rather allows the bypass to be created while the heart is still beating (termed off pump coronary artery bypass).

Once the patients are unconscious, the surgeon cuts an incision 10 inches long in the center of the chest (in the case of robotic heart surgery, three very tiny incisions are made instead of one large one). Then, the breastbone is separated to permit the surgeon to see the heart and aorta (the principal blood vessel leading out from the heart). The surgeon will take an artery or vein from another part of the patients’ bodies and use it to make a graft (a detour) around the artery’s blocked area. Frequently the saphenous vein in the leg is used – an incision is made along the inside of the leg between the groin and ankle to cut the vein, which is then sewn to the coronary artery on one end and to an opening in the aorta on the other. Sometimes the internal mammary artery in the chest is used for grafting; this has the advantage that one end of this artery is already connected to the aorta, so only the other end needs to be sewn to the coronary artery. After the graft is done, the patients’ breastbone is reconnected with a wire (which remains in the body) and the incision is closed.

In hospitals in Chicago area, the entire surgery takes from four to six hours, after which the patients are taken to the hospitals’ intensive care unit. Usually several tubes in the patients’ chests drain fluid from the heart area. There may also be a flexible tube called a catheter in the bladder to drain the urine; and intravenous lines for fluid intake. Monitors constantly provide information about the patients’ vital signs such as breathing, temperature, and pulse. Usually the patients leave the IC unit within 24 hours, and are moved to a regular care unit to recover their strength. Normally patients spend about a week in the hospital; and it requires four to six weeks for the patients to begin feeling better.

It is absolutely imperative that you learn how to reduce your chances of a heart attack. It has been established that the lifestyle choices that you make are the top levels of defense when it comes to preventing a heart attack.

1. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are going to provide your body with vitamins and minerals, which it cannot manufacture on its own, and you’ll also find that through eating these foods, you are going to be able to drop your cholesterol level, which will help you avoid heart disease in the long run. Similarly, some foods that are rich in antioxidants and other helpful substances can help you keep your heart healthy as well.

2. Make sure that you plan your diet. Eating well doesn’t happen overnight, and you’ll find that if you simply charge into it without a plan that you are going to run into problems. It’s easy to say that you want to eat in a more healthy fashion, but unless you sit down and plan menus, chances are good that the end of the day will roll around and it will just be easier to order out or to cook something that you know about. Try keeping foods like carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli washed and ready for preparation in your refrigerator, and always make sure that you have good recipes on hand.

3. Be able to identify the unhealthy fats. Saturated fats are going to be significantly unhealthier for you than unsaturated fats; ideally they are less than seven percent of your total daily calories. They can clog up your arteries, making your heart work harder and putting you at risk for heart disease. When you want to eliminate the unhealthier kinds of fat that you consume, make sure that you cut back on the butter, margarine and shortening that you use in your food. Consider healthier alternatives, like olive oil and canola oil to help you avoid heart disease.

4. Get more lean protein in your diet. There are meats out there that are low in fat and much healthier for you. For instance, try cutting out red meat or at least reducing it. Look for fish and cuts of white meat on poultry. Some fish, like tuna and salmon, are especially healthy for you thanks to the fact that they are high in omega 3 fatty acids, which your body needs for good functioning. Remember that your meals do not have to be tasteless, just better planned.

5. Consider portion control. The truth is that foods that have fat in them taste good. It is hard to cut them out entirely and unless there is a medical problem that specifically prevents you from doing so, you can continue eating them. The trick is to make sure that you do not eat them to excess, however! Take some time and really consider what you can do eat in moderation; learn about acceptable portion sizes in order to avoid heart disease.

6. Don’t give up. No matter how good your intentions, chances are good that you may lapse. Just get back on and do better; it is completely possible to avoid heart disease.

How to Reduce Your Chances of a Heart Attack

It is absolutely imperative that you learn how to reduce your chances of a heart attack. It has been established that the lifestyle choices that you make are the top levels of defense when it comes to preventing a heart attack. This particular health complication typically arises when the flow of the blood to one of the sections of the heart becomes blocked for one reason or another. In most situations, the heart can pump faster and push the obstruction through. However, there are some situations in which it is unable to do this. As a result, the deprivation of oxygen results in the death of the heart.

There are also conditions, which are referred to as heart diseases that can result in a heart attack. These include congestive heart failure, heart disease that is considered to be coronary, as well as heart disease that is considered to be congenital. In this medical guide, you will be introduced to methods that can assist you in reducing your chances of experiencing this potentially fatal condition, such as following a heart healthy diet and engaging in an effective cardiac workout.

Step One:

The first method that you can use in order to reduce your chances of having a heart attack is to engage in a heart healthy diet. Heart disease research has indicated that a diet that incorporates high levels of nutrition is an effective strategy against preventing complications of the heart, such as coronary heart disease. The foods and beverages that you consume have an impact on whether you will develop conditions, such as dangerous blood pressure levels, excessive weight gain, dangerous cholesterol levels, and even diabetes. All of these conditions can result in heart diseases, or heart attack.

The heart healthy diet should include foods that contain a low amount of calories, and have a high level of vitamins and minerals. Whole grains, Fiber enriched, and lean protein diets are typically effective. When consuming dairy products, ensure that they have low levels of fat, or no fat at all to make certain that they compliment your health. You should consume large amounts of vegetables, lean meats, as well as an assortment of fruits to ensure that you are indulging in a heart healthy diet.

Step Two:

The next step to reducing your chances of experiencing a heart attack is to ensure that you engage in a cardiac workout on a regular basis. You should spend about half an hour a day working out in one way or another daily. If you want to prevent the development of cardiovascular disease, the following exercises can prove to be highly beneficial:

Swimming

Walking

Bicycle Activities

Aerobics

Dancing

Jogging

Step Three:

Many individuals are not aware of the fact that high levels of stress can result in the onset of one of the heart diseases that can be experienced, or the initialization of a heart attack, but it is a proven fact. If you are looking to reduce your chances of suffering from a heart attack, it is essential that you strive to elevate the stress in your life. When you experience stress, your body kicks in to a mode that is often referred to as the “flight or fight response”. As a result, your body starts to prepare for danger, as this is what it senses. This results in the heart pumping faster, certain hormones being released, increased pressure on the respiratory system, and other physiological responses. All of these responses can have a negative impact on the health of the heart.

Step Four:

Do you consume alcohol or smoke? If so, you should make every effort to cease these activities as they can lead to the onset of a heart attack. It has been found that out of an average of 450,000 deaths annually in the United States that are related to smoking, nearly half of the individuals in this particular group had heart diseases. Alcohol, on the other hand can have many detrimental effects on the heart. It can result in high levels in the blood pressure, result in dangerous levels of triglycerides in the blood which can clog arteries and result in heart disease. In addition to this, alcohol can result in irregular beats in the heart muscle.

Step Five:

As you can see, you can take an active role in reducing your chances of having a heart attack. All you have to do is indulge in a heart healthy diet, ensure that you participate regularly in a cardiac workout, and make healthy lifestyle choices.

Having a systolic pressure of 160 or higher or a diastolic pressure of 100 or higher, or possessing both readings to be high; you have stage 2 high blood pressure. In such scenarios, you will most likely require to take a minimum of at least two common medications upon starting your treatment.

Similarly to stage 1 hypertension, you will be most likely to be prescribed a thiazide diuretic. Excess water and sodium are eliminated from your body by the thiazide diuretic. This will effectively lower your blood pressure. Together with the diuretic, you might also be recommended to take:

A calcium channel blocker: Due to this drug being used, calcium cannot go to both the heart and the blood vessel muscle cells. This allows the cells to stay relax and thus reduce the blood pressure.

An ACE inhibitor: By inhibiting the production of the hormone that causes blood vessels to shrink, this drug aids to keep the blood vessels relax.

A beta blocker: This drug work by lowering the nerve signals to the heart and blood vessels thus reducing the blood pressure.

An angiotensin II receptor blocker: Expands blood vessels by stopping a hormone called Angiotensin from affecting the vessels.

When your blood pressure increase dramatically, it is crucial to lower it rapidly in order to prevent or delay the complications. A two-drug combination generally works faster as compared to a single drug to get your blood pressure under control.

Similarly to Stage 1 Hypertension, a double medication combo also protects the patient against heart disease, kidney failure and stroke. In some cases, a third, or more, medication may be needed in order to get your condition under control.

High blood pressure is more often than not present with other health problems. Some of the conditions present might be serious enough to warrant a more aggressive treatment. These conditions are:

-Diabetes

-Heart failure

-Chronic kidney disease

-Previous heart attack

-High risk of coronary artery disease

-Enlarged left chamber of the heart (left ventricular hypertrophy)

-Previous stroke

By having Hypertension, you have a greater risk of contracting any of the conditions in the above list. Thus, if you already have one or more of these conditions plus high blood pressure, your chances of developing a life-threatening complication increases. Therefore, a more forceful treatment might be needed in order to reduce your risk of getting these complications.

You might be prescribed specific high blood pressure medications to treat these conditions, as well as additional medications for your high blood pressure. Example: Beta blockers might be prescribed for your chest pain (Angina), these drugs also work to lower your blood pressure, prevent chest pain, reduce your heart rate and reduce your risk of death.

Taking both a thiazide diuretic and an ACE inhibitor can decrease your risk of heart attack and stroke if you have both diabetes and high blood pressure. However if you have diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease, you might require an additional medicine to be added to the cocktail such as an angiotensin II receptor blocker.

Some forms of heart disease develop when the heart is attacked by viruses or are due to congenital deformities. However, in a lot of cases, heart disease is related to the lifestyle and choices you make on a daily basis. It is therefore important to be able to understand that there are risk factors that contribute to heart disease. Some of them are under your control, but some of them are not. What follows is a summary of these different risk factors.

Risk Factors that you cannot change:

* Age – Heart disease increases as you age.
* Family History – Your risk of heart disease goes up if an immediate family member has had heart disease or a stroke.
* Gender – Being male puts you at increased risk of heart disease development. Women, however, are at increased risk after menopause.
* Race – If you are African-American, Mexican-American, South Asian, Native American or Aboriginal, you are at increased risk.

Risk Factors that you can change or control:

* Lack of activity and exercise – Too many people have become couch potatoes and this sedentary lifestyle is affecting our hearts in a negative way. You need to start exercising every day to ward off heart disease. Doing this allows you to maintain a healthy weight and keep your heart strong and pumping effectively.
* Smoking – Whether you are the one smoking or you are breathing in second-hand smoke, you are damaging your blood vessel walls each time. Smoking also causes your heart to work harder, because it reduces the amount of oxygen carried in your bloodstream. It should be noted that this applies to smoking anything whether it be cigarettes, cigars, or pipes.
* Eating Habits – You need to focus more on heart-healthy fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and foods that have a lot of fiber in them. As well, you want to avoid or decrease consumption of foods that are high in fat, and replace them with foods that have healthy fats such as the Omega 3 fatty acids. Salt is also known to contribute to high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease, so limit your salt intake as well. You also want to limit your alcohol intake, as drinking more than two per day, increases your blood pressure.
* High blood pressure – Blood pressure that is too high damages your blood vessels, and makes the heart work harder. Over time, the heart can then become weaker. Regular visits to your physician to monitor your blood pressure is important, as is taking any prescribed medications to lower it. Blood pressure can also be controlled by starting an exercise program under the guidance of your physician, losing weight if necessary, decreasing and controlling stress in your life, not smoking, and eating healthy foods.
* High blood cholesterol – You want to ensure that the less healthy LDL cholesterol is kept in check and that the healthier HDL cholesterol can do its job in your body. High levels of cholesterol is said to increase the deposits of fatty streaks on the blood vessel walls, which can lead to their narrowing over time.
* Diabetes – It is important if you have diabetes, that you control your blood sugar levels through diet, exercise, and medications as simply having diabetes increases your risk for developing heart disease.
* Stress – Stress, when it becomes prolonged, is not good for your heart. You need to learn how to de-stress by exercising, joining a fun activity, or just learning to say “no” to things that come your way on a daily basis.

In summary, there are risk factors for heart disease; some of which we can control or change, others which we cannot control. Even if you have a number of the risk factors that you cannot change, do know that there are other risk factors that you CAN change.
